Job Purpose

The Driver Salesman is a frontline, revenue-generating role responsible for owning and dominating an assigned sales route through disciplined execution of route sales, customer coverage, order generation, merchandising standards, and cash control.

The role is sales-led and execution-focused, with accountability for achieving route-level sales targets, expanding numeric and weighted distribution, and strengthening customer relationships. Operation of a Company-assigned Heavy T-class vehicle supports route mobility and access and is a secondary, compliance-based requirement of the role.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Sales Growth & Route Execution

• Own and execute an assigned route with accountability for sales volume, outlet coverage, and customer servicing.

• Achieve or exceed assigned route sales and volume targets.

• Identify and develop new outlets, dormant accounts, and upselling opportunities.

• Strengthen Company brand presence through effective selling and in-store execution.

• Execute approved pricing, promotions, and sales initiatives in line with Company guidelines.

• Monitor competitor activity and provide timely market feedback.

 

Route Planning & Customer Coverage

• Plan daily route activity to maximise selling time, delivery efficiency, and customer contact.

• Maintain disciplined call cycles and consistent customer visitation.

• Understand customer buying patterns, volume potential, and service requirements.

• Escalate route-level issues and risks promptly.

 

Order Generation & Merchandising

• Generate accurate sales orders in line with customer demand and Company policies.

• Ensure products are properly displayed and rotated at customer locations.

• Support promotional execution and product launches.

• Monitor product quality and presentation and escalate concerns where necessary.

 

Loading, Delivery & Inventory Accountability

• Ensure accurate loading, delivery, and documentation of products in line with approved documentation and Company procedures.

• Verify quantities, product condition, and customer acknowledgement for all deliveries.

• Account for returns and exchanges in accordance with Company requirements.

• Maintain control and accountability for vehicle-assigned inventory during route execution

 

Cash, Credit & Sales Controls

• Collect cash, cheques, or electronic payments strictly in accordance with Company procedures.

• Reconcile sales, collections, inventory, and documentation accurately and on time.

• Maintain complete and accurate route and sales records.

• Safeguard Company funds, documentation, and sales equipment.

 

6. Customer Relationship Management

• Build and maintain professional relationships with customers on the assigned route.

• Act as the first point of contact for routine customer service matters.

• Resolve day-to-day issues promptly and escalate complex concerns appropriately.

• Represent the Company professionally at all times.

 

Vehicle Operation & Compliance

• Operate a Company-assigned Heavy T-class vehicle for authorised sales and delivery activities.

• Maintain a valid Heavy T-class Driver’s Permit at all times.

• Conduct basic pre-trip vehicle checks and report defects promptly.

• Comply with Road Traffic Laws and Company vehicle policies.

• Ensure responsible care and use of the assigned vehicle.

Skills & knowledge required

• Strong understanding of route-based sales execution and direct-to-trade distribution, including territory coverage and customer servicing dynamics.

• Ability to build and maintain effective customer relationships while independently managing assigned routes and sales priorities.

• Sound numerical, reconciliation, and record-keeping skills to support accurate handling of sales transactions, stock, and collections.

• Good communication skills to engage customers professionally and coordinate effectively with internal teams.

• Strong sense of discipline, accountability, and attention to detail in managing sales, inventory, and Company assets.

 

Physical & Work Requirements

• Ability to perform physical work associated with route sales, including lifting and handling products.

• Ability to stand, walk, and work on and off a sales vehicle throughout the day.

• Willingness to work in varying environmental conditions and adhere to safety requirements.

 

Qualifications & Experience required

• Diploma in Sales, Marketing, Business, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

• Previous experience in route sales, van sales, FMCG sales, or direct distribution is preferred.

• Experience handling inventory, cash, or transactional sales activities in a sales or distribution environment is an asset.
