Job Description- Optical Laboratory Technician

Role Summary

The Optical Lab Technician under the general direction of the Lab Manager/ Supervisor participates in all laboratory lens processing activities at our in-house laboratories. He/she will generally perform all aspects of surfacing and finishing lenses including lens selection and data entry. 

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret work orders and instructions for surfacing and edging lenses for the purpose of producing a quality fabricated pair of eyewear

• Use frame tracers for tracing frames and demo lenses as required

• Operate alloy blocking machines for blocking of lenses and retrieval as necessary

• Operate the relevant generators daily for the surfacing of all lenses

• Use the identified laser equipment for engraving of lenses as required

• Operate the identified machines for the polishing of all free form and conventional lenses

• Test lens’ prescription using manual and automated lens meter or lens analyzer to verify that the power of the lens blank is surfaced correctly for edging 

• Edge lenses using the identified lab equipment

• Hand edge and safety bevel lenses

• Edge polish lenses on the hand buffer or appropriate machinery

• Assess the quality of lenses post-edging to ensure they adhere to the standards of the tolerance charts in both power and surface quality

• Trace frame in tracer as required and confirm that all trace data and shapes are accurate

• Mount lenses into frame (frame materials include plastic, metal, nylon etc.)

• Ensure that all parameters associated with work order are verified for accuracy

• Ensure in collaboration with Quality Control that finished lenses meet or exceed ANSI Z80.1 standards using quality assurance checklist

• Participate in anti-reflecting coating processes and procedures and adhere to the standard operating procedure which governs the anti-reflective coating lab 

 

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum of five (5) CXC / GCE O Level subjects, including Mathematics and English 

• Background in science is an asset but not a requirement 

• Availability to work some Saturdays, if operational needs require

Required Skills and Competencies

• Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy, quality control, and compliance with laboratory standards 

• Ability to effectively multitask while maintaining precision and consistency 

• Strong organizational and time management skills to meet workflow demands and turnaround times
