Scope/Objective
To execute the quality assurance functions and manage the activities of the quality assurance department to ensure production of safe, high quality food products that meet Regulatory, Company and Customer specifications and that international quality and food safety standards and systems are implemented and maintained during all stages of processing from the receipt of raw materials to the delivery of finished product. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain company's quality procedures, standards and specifications.
  • Maintain oversight of QA and Food Safety programs for compliance
  • Develop, document, implement and maintain a GFSI approved food safety management system such as SQF or FSSC22000
  • Lead and manage quality assurance technicians and coordinate their activities to ensure Food Safety and Quality Standards are maintained.
  • Monitor and enforce GMP, proper sanitation and housekeeping procedures
  • Collaborate with departments in order to implement procedures and improve quality performance
  • Daily review of all documentation generated by the QA/Food safety programs for compliance, completeness, errors and omissions and communicate concerns to the plant and production manager.
  • Reviewing customer requirements and making sure they are met
  • Apply quality assurance processes and procedures to ensure product quality and regulatory compliance
  • Update existing food safety procedures and documentation to keep up with changing requirements.
  • Working with purchasing staff to establish quality requirements from external suppliers.
  • Set standards for quality as well as health and safety.
  • Ensure customer complaints are handled in a manner consistent with Company SOPs 
  • Conduct food safety training for all employees and ensure that the training is documented.
  • Conduct periodic internal audits of the facility to monitor compliance with established procedures and practices. 
  • Participate in audits with the Plant and Production Manager and external auditors to ensure compliance to Quality and food safety systems.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Communicate with suppliers and customers regarding quality issues.
  • Liaise with external service provider on management of pest control program
  • Review and address of out of spec product in coordination with the Plant and Production Manager.
  • Lead projects as required

    Qualifications, Experience & Skills
  • Degree in Chemistry, Food Science or other relevant qualification and experience
  • At least 2 years experience in a similar position
  • Good knowledge of quality/food safety programs e.g. GMPs, SSOP, HACCP, SQF, FSCC22000 is an asset
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong math, statistical and analytical skills with ability to problem solve
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to work extended hours when necessary
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50lb (23kg)
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods, bend, reach, twist, stoop
