When Isabelle (“Izzy”) first joined the team, it was for a simple two-week project: scan and sort CVs from a job fair. That’s it. No grand onboarding, no big expectations. But what started as a short-term temp contract turned into a two-year journey full of growth, impact, and plenty of unexpected moments.
How It Started
Fresh out of university and on the lookout for any opportunity, Izzy sent in her CV after hearing about a short project from her dad. “I was just expecting to stay busy,” she recalls. “Scan, sort, and move on.” But after that initial project wrapped up, the team kept finding reasons to bring her back. And thankfully, she kept saying yes.
Over time, her role evolved from basic admin support to handling database uploads, recruitment shortlisting, job tracking, mailshots, and even employee engagement.
A Quiet Force with Big Ideas
“I think my initiative helped me get to where I am today,” she said. “I was always curious about what everyone else was working on and found myself asking to help or learn.” That curiosity and her ability to step up made her a go-to team member long after the temp title wore off.
Izzy didn’t just take tasks off our hands. She brought her personality into the workplace. Whether helping with mental health activities or organizing a full-on company Sports Day (prizes and all), she proved that great hires aren’t always found through traditional channels. They're often grown right here.
Culture Matters
One of the things Izzy appreciated most was being treated like more than just a temp. “I still laugh about the fact that my email said ‘temp contractor’ for ages. But the day I got my own desk and work-from-home privileges, it felt real.”
She also credits her teammates, especially Janee, Carla, and Reanna, for showing her the ropes. “I kind of ‘infiltrated’ the JobsTT area of the office,” she joked. “But those women helped me settle in and learn so much.”
Advice for Other Employers
As someone who started in a two-week temp role and grew into an integral part of the team, Izzy has a message for companies on the fence about hiring interns or short-term contractors:
“Take a chance on that new hire. You may not be looking for someone long-term, but they may end up being exactly what your company was missing.”
And to managers working with early-career talent:
“Be patient with their lack of experience. Show them the ropes. You might be the reason they find their confidence.”
What’s Next?
Izzy is off to England to continue her studies and explore a new chapter (and every matcha café she passes along the way). But she’s leaving with more than just a packed suitcase.
“I’ve learned that I’m more capable than I thought. I used to doubt myself a lot, but this job helped me see that I can figure things out, even if I don’t get it right away.”
What We’ll Miss
From her creative ideas to her thoughtfulness and quiet consistency, Izzy leaves behind more than a job well done. She leaves a legacy of what’s possible when someone is given a real chance.
