JOB OVERVIEW:
The Manager – Health Underwriting has primary and overall responsibility for all health underwriting operations and premium pricing. The Manager will work towards the company’s vision by balancing profitability and commercial concerns, while ensuring all regulatory and technical standards are met. The Manager, Health Underwriting supports the Vice President – Operations by providing expert in-depth knowledge, insight and direction in executing the strategic objectives of the organization.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Administration and Risk Assessment
  • Effectively administer health underwriting guidelines to achieve profitability targets. 
  • Manage requests and communication from relevant external stakeholders including brokers and employers. 
  • Set priorities, targets and standards (metrics) for regional health underwriting; review and evaluate the performance; provide feedback and calibrate as needed. 
  • Ensure compliance with relevant internal and external standards (i.e., underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions) and develop policies and practices to achieve compliance.  
  • Perform Underwriting of applications, particularly high-risk cases. 
  • Review applications from other underwriters of cases above their limit. 
  • Pricing of exceptional cases (to be defined and agreed). 
  • To ensure Quotations are prepared and dispatched with an effective and efficient follow-up system in place, within timelines defined by the Line Executive. 
  • To ensure Policy Contracts/Renewals are prepared and dispatched within the specified time frame at an accuracy of 100%. 
  • Ensure that the performance level is defined by the Line Executive of Internal and External Customer satisfaction and processing standards. 
  • To assist in ensuring Financial Performance meets Department Budget and assist in the general budgeting process of the department and company. 
  • Develop and maintain cordial relationships with the company’s management and senior management based on trust, knowledge and partnership. 
  • To perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the Executive.
People Management
  • Lead, motivate, inspire and encourage employees through effective performance management – setting of clear goals and objectives and to ensure that performance assessments are completed and submitted on time and accurately.
  • Ensuring that performance gaps are closed through relevant training, monitoring work performance through continuous performance discussions, coaching and timely completion of appraisals. Devise ways to optimize procedures and keep staff motivated.
  • Leave Management and Preparation of Enrolment Forms for approval in accordance with established procedures. Ensure equitable distribution of work which includes when any staff is on leave.
  • Train, motivate and direct employees to optimize productivity and promote professional growth.
  • Improve staff work processes: determine if inefficiencies exist and find solutions, develop and implement monitoring tools.
  • When required conduct interviews or assist with headhunting for appropriate staff.
  • Attending all escalated discipline and grievance matters to ensure staff operate within the set professional guidelines of the company and fair treatment of all.
  • Weekly huddles with staff to discuss performance and any appropriate action to be taken.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 
  • First Degree in Management or related field from a recognized tertiary educational institution. 
  • Post Graduate qualification.
  • FLMI Designation or equivalent certification
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the Insurance Industry with at least 5 years in a Senior Health Underwriting Role 
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the pricing of Group Health and Life Insurance or in the Financial Industry
  • At least 5 years’ managing people at senior level.
  • Appreciation of basic principles in finance, accounting, human resource management, marketing, information technology etc.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
As a regulated entity with obligations under the Know Your Employee guidelines, a Certificate of Character is required.


PERSON SPECIFICATION: 
The Manager- Health Underwriting must be flexible, highly adaptive to changes in the organisation and possess excellent interpersonal skills, with a strong customer service focus. He/ She must be a very meticulous, organised and detail-oriented individual. The individual must possess strong problem-solving skills and be able to make sound decisions. Time management is of the essence. He/ She must possess a keen sense of professionalism, energy and drive and must be highly confidential. The incumbent must be a team player, have a pleasant disposition and must be service oriented.
